If I used every gear in the city my right arm would be huge. To start the truck you want to let out the clutch with no power and the truck moves. So you select the gear that does that. Of course if you're on a grade it's much different. But you don't give it power and release the clutch. It puts too much strain on the drive line.
When you're upshifting in the beginning most likely you'll want to use all your gears. But as you gain experience you'll learn three different ways of shifting and those are double clutch, floating, and progressive. Floating does not make a truck driver. What makes you experienced is knowing how to do all of the shifting.
When starting out in your driving career most people have a hard time double clutching and I believe it's because they spend too much time in neutral and then they get rushed and get lost in the shift. All you need to do is pull it back into neutral release the clutch increase engine speed and try again. Never force it.
The whole trick is to learn what gear goes with what road speed. Stay relaxed and let the truck work for you.
Remember don't let any super trucker tell you you're not a truck driver until you float gears. You're a truck driver when you know all the shifting and you let the truck work for you and not you working for the truck. Floating is easy but can cause damage if you bang gears all the time and should only be done when you know exactly how to do it.
What gear do you start/stop in?

I love it when people act like floating gears is such an incredible thing that only a chosen few are able to master. Puh-lease... All you do is give the gas pedal a little goose and pop it out of gear.
Getting it back into gear is just as easy... -
Alot more to it ............

I start in 2nd loaded, 4th empty. I usually end up stopping in 6th as well, but sometimes will get down to 5th or 4th
-
I stop in 4th and I typically start there to. Never had any problems.
