What gives CAT engines their distinctive "whine" noise?

Today's cars sound like that too. Nothing like a 351 or 429 waking up in cold frost, fumes included. CHUG CHUG... etc. wake up the neighborhood at 5 am with those glasspacks. My neighbors love me... not.

No splits in my time with exception of underdrive in a 13. off hammer a moment, back on, half a gear set RPMs come back up (Remember 2400 or roughly) Front bumper takes a lean lightens one steer with that reo. It did not take much.

Granted it's a little one. But boy she can climb. Like wife...

Depends on the weight that I am pulling but at legal weight I am getting near 7mpg empty it's about 7.5 but if I'm over weight pulling big equipment I am near 6 mpg at around 120,000 but all this is on flat ground but I have run from north of Indianapolis down near Miami pulling a nice load before I ever filled the fuel tanks back up

    Sure are...
Have chased some "steady speeders" in the past who sported hi top clod hoppers and bib overalls. Just saying...

A little off the truck subject @AModelCat , but have you listened to the new Komatsu actics and excavators? Must have something to do with the emission systems, but they make kind of a whoofing sound when given more fuel. Goofy sounding to me.

Haven't heard that yet. I was playing with some brand new Cat XQ generators a while back and when you'd hit them with an 80% load or better they'd make a weird whoosh sound out the exhaust for a second. They have all the fancy DOC, DPF and SCR on them now too :(

I'm glad you posted this. I always wondered why my 6TS sounded like that. I remember in 2007, in Baytown, TX. T/A it was 98 degrees and humid. I left the truck idling around 900 rpm while I walked my dog and I can hear my engine from across the truck stop. Even over the other idling trucks.

I was slightly concerned but, people here and there would comment "Now that's what a Cat is supposed to sound like". So I gradually forgot worrying about it.
