I second this... I agree with rustybolt learn the country without the help of modern technology then use a GPS for a secondary tool.... far to many newbreed drivers rely on crap like google maps and such crap that are not truck specific or even intended to be used for a truck.... then when they screw up they want to blame somebody or something else simply for the fact of not using common sense.. so no this is not the worst advice given on truckersreport.... NEWBREEDS!!! y'all are killing me

I'll chime in and say forget the GPS and learn the map. My Nav has gotten me in more trouble than it's worth, it doesn't have your best interest in mind. Put in a city address and almost always tells me that I've arrived at my destination and it's an empty lot or it's like 6 blocks from where I need to be.

Use google maps satellite view to follow the route from the freeway to the customer site. I've learned that even calling the customer for directions can sometimes result in a horrifying driving experience.

I agree. Returned my Rand with a quickness. Pilot employee said the Garmin outsells the Rand by a lot with truckers. I never even considered returning this puppy. It's amazing. Yes, amazing.

All these guys saying the gps got you in trouble. I don't understand it. Do you suddenly become illiterate when you turn the gps on? Blind to signs? Mesmerized maybe hypnotized by percieved sentience when the unit speaks. This is why trucking is considered unskilled labor which it is but really man; my god.

From the number of times steering wheel holders have been quoted as saying "but my GPS told me.....", it would appear that, yes, people go stupid when it gets turned on.

That said, I really think it's more that they get lulled into trusting it as each day passes. Its the "it never steered me wrong before" mentality that, I think, gets people in trouble. Thus, my reasoning for knowing how to route without a GPS. And to verify your route every time, if you do use one.

Actually, the old breed of truckers is what got us into this mess with running illegal and road dope...

The atlas will get you to the town.
Relying on a shipper to give you directions his asking for trouble. Who's to say they won't route you using google maps?

Tech has come a long way. Use it a little.

A paper map, a brain and some gut instinct. Unfortunately, the latter two cannot be bought.
