What happened to "real" restaurants at truckstops? What stops still have them?

I do eat several times during the week, but after paying the bill and leaving the tip at one of those mediocre meals, I often just wish I had eaten a sandwich. I’m not against paying for good food and service, just too much of those meals served nowadays is something I can do without.

I'd say you made your point very well. I've known people (husband and wife team) as nice as you will ever meet and they could go days on peanut butter and jelly for lunch and balogna and cheese for supper. Heck, when I was a kid I practically lived on velveeta cheese sandwiches. When I was over the road I could eat hamburgers for lunch and dinner.

You get the point, if you don’t nothing I can say will help you.

Deli meat, I don’t need 1/2 lb on a sandwich to be happy with it.

I guess it's like everything else, bottom line is all about profits. If it is more profitable to lease space to a food franchise like Subway or McDonald's or Duncan Donuts, then we're stuck with it. The thing that gets me is that you new guys will never know what it was like to come off the road, tired, dirty and hungry and be able to get your day straightened out. With all of the change associated with electronic logs especially regarding breaks and 34 hour reset, a driver is forced to comply and has the time for a good sit down meal. I know, more and more guys are not inclined to want to spend their money on meals but I think that's a product of lousy fast food. Especially when you are beat up after driving in stormy weather and gripping the wheel and watching out for everyone else for hours and hours, a driver needs a place to relax and gather himself. One of my favorite meals was a open hot Turkey sandwich. Not everyplace made a good one but it was my shut down for the night meal.

Ever been stuck in a truck stop during a blizzard? Darn! Out west it was common to get shut down for sometimes a day. The truck stop diner almost always ran short of something but that coffee pot was always full and there was a kind of relief in knowing that you were safe and in a place that would do it's best to take care of everyone. Little America in Wyoming was really a safe haven during severe weather. God! The wind blew and temps dipped there. Is the place still there?

No no... you new guys will never know real truck stop hospitality and that is something that every trucker should experience.

Whats wrong with Subways? Yeah i know if you love a real home cooked meal it kinda sucks there are still lots of truck stops where you can still order a steak cooked just the way you want it, thought most J's still have a restaurant, the Petro at Reno NV some have always had buffets though then went back to restaurant style which i didn't like.

Absolutely nothing wrong with subway as far as I'm concerned. Sometimes its really a great grab and get rolling meal.

It just kinda sucks when it is closed overnight and your hungry.

Yeah i agree subways not a bad meal i could eat it all the time, better then the Scottish Restaurant type food and it is all about speed these days i mean if one is parked at the fuel bay one has to get away quickly don't they, lest they upset someone if they sat down and had a proper cooked meal huh?

I don’t think that’s entirely true. Restaurants and diners where locals eat and truck drivers are welcome are out there, though maybe not as many as used to be. Some are listed here

    Restaurants with/near Truck Parking

What you say is probably very true. The exception is with regard to catering to truckers with ample parking and trucker hospitality....
