Bad memory...can only think of 3 that were "good"? 49"ers ts in California,A casino buffet in wendover Utah/Nevada? ...and a really good "barbecued rib",somewhere in Arkansas, kinda off the beaten path.
What happened to "real" restaurants at truckstops? What stops still have them?

Meatloaf is one of those things that’s highly subjective from one individual to another. Unlimited ways to make a meat loaf and many diners only like them a certain way. To me, ordering the meatloaf is always a 50/50 shot at best but will still roll the dice on occasion. Typically, I just find them “okay”. It’s rare I find one I truly enjoyed and would look forward to having again.2old, Sirscrapntruckalot and rabbiporkchop Thank this.
You mean the ones you see in truckstops with headsets on walking around babbling nonsense?
The old decrepit steering wheel holders who yak and yak nonstop and bore everyone to death and think they’re flirting with the waitress and then leave her a 50 cent tip. Well they ruined the service for us steering wheel holders since the waitresses expect every driver will tip like a stingy fool.
Well I read through this entire thread and I was amazed at the number of posts that talk about the decline of good truck stops. I haven't been over the road since the late 70's and I have memories of some good places, but many were T/A and 76'ers.
Having said that, I was really surprised by tucker's post regarding tipping. I would have to agree whole heartedly that many truckers (even back in my day) were lousy tippers. Eating in truckstops was never cheap, and leaving tips 3 times a day does add up but, I always went by the 10% to 20% depending on the service. Sometimes the food was lousy but the service was good and I tipped for service NOT FOOD. So I wonder, how much tipping might have played into the decline of good eateries? After all... if waitresses can't make decent tips, then it's hard to find good ones to put up with us (truckers).
I'm bummed out! Thinking of doing a little cross country traveling and was counting on good truck stops to eat at.Dave_in_AZ and Oxbow Thank this. -
Fast food in all the big chain truck stops killed the eat ins... and crappy food had something to do with it too.
-
I'm sure it did...and it's a darn shame. It was always nice to be headed toward a good truck stop and thinking about a good meal.

Yeah, any more I’d almost rather eat a cold cut sandwich out of my truck than pay good money for their mediocre food.... and that is what I do a lot of times. They have improved the last couple years, they’re not totally crap, just not really good home cooking.
