What happened to "real" restaurants at truckstops? What stops still have them?

I was struck by the difference between a place like the Loves truck stop in Canaan NY and Wilton travel plaza in Ganesvoort NY. Both are nice and clean but Scottys at the Wilton travel plaza is much bigger and gives a driver a chance to sit and eat a good meal. According to some of the posts there are still a few good places to stop thank God, but I feel sorry for you guys today. Subway and Duncan Donuts get old when that's all you guys have to look forward to.

You guys better take good care of the few that are left. When I get back out there I'm gonna need a good meal lol

 

I don’t do subway, I can eat for almost 2 weeks on my own fixings for what they charge for one foot long.

 

So, do you cook in your truck?

 

2old, There is no doubt that Scotty's in Wilton, NY is a gem. If only there were more truck stops like this. The replies are showing that todays drivers do not want to sit down and eat in a restaurant but want quick and heart killing food from fast food places or cook in their trucks. The fast food "joints" are not on my agenda no matter what and I can't see the cost of the investment for all the appliances, cookware,dinnerware and groceries needed to sustain you while on the road. Then you have to clean up after you eat and find enough space to store everything, need an inverter or APU. I enjoy a daycab, eat at truck stops with sit down restaurants and motel when needed on regional run.

 

That sounds like me... I've been hauling local since I gave up OTR in the 70's. I haul gasoline and sleep in my own bed every night. But It have considered going back OTR. Sounds like things have really changed.

 

You can get a foot long sub for $5 plus tax and you can eat for 2 weeks on less than that?

Me too. I read these sorts of comments all the time. People like to greatly exaggerate numbers and I’m not sure why. Who wants to live on a $4 a week food menu? Political prisoners would even balk at this.

I guess. I’m proud to say I might spend maybe $150 week eating varied meals, some good, some mediocre, as opposed to eating 1/4 cup portions of the same entree for 9 days, and calling that - “dining well”.

 

Maybe double what you spend on that foot long, unless you buy chips and a drink.
On the high side... $7.00 for one pound of deli lunch meat
1loaf of bread
1big bag of chips, not single serving size, so for little more than what you spent on your meal of a foot long and single serving bag of chips I have fixings fo 4 or 5 meals depends on how many slices of bread I use.

I know what I said, a bit of a tall tale, but not by much. I can eat a meal off of that for 4or 5 times over the course of 2 weeks. I didn’t include a drink there because some get them and some don’t, I usually drink water with my sandwich or occasionally milk. Had I included the cost of a soda, that would have paid for about 1/2 of my 1/2 gallon of milk.

I know it’s not for all, and I did stretch the truth a little bit, but not that much. Just my choice, I’d rather by those fixings and make a sandwich in my truck than pay for a subway, because personally I feel their sandwiches are mediocre at best.
