What happens after orientation with Schneider?

I have a couple questions for those that have gone through Schneider's orientation, specifically in Charlotte, NC.

I'm headed to orientation at the end of this month and am curious about what the majority did after completing their orientation.

The recruiter sent me an email with some information about the training schedule, but there is some conflicting information between what she told me, what the schedule she sent me says, and what people have actually experienced from reading here on this forum.

After the first Tuesday-Saturday "Hard Skills Program" do the trainers most of the time meet you in Charlotte, or did you get sent home to meet your trainer?

At the end of the orientation, the schedule she sent me mentions that on the last Saturday I'll be traveling home, most likely under a load. I take it under a load means I will have a trailer, right? Does this "home" mean a couple days off? Its no problem to keep my truck at my place but I can't swing a 53' trailer in... I may need to talk to my neighbor and see if I could park there. I live near Chapel Hill, NC, so thats about 130 miles from the OC in Charlotte. If I am leaving from Charlotte with my Schneider truck I will also need to work out how to get my personal vehicle back home as well.

I'm sure all of these questions will be answered as I go through the process, but I'm a little nervous and the more I know the better I feel about everything.

    Thanks!

If you are a student, you will go home then meet a trainer.

    not necessarily.

I have seen students meet up with their trainer right after orientation. It really just depends. You could be sent home and have your trainer contact you(that is how it was with me) but a couple in my orientation left straight from orientation with their trainer. They were also on dedicated accounts, so that could make the difference.

Sometimes I can't help myself but this is the first opportunity I've had since I came up with it, after hearing all the "Swift" ones that I had heard from other drivers, but don't take it personally. I will answer your question with this...

SCHNIEDER = Shoulda Coulda Had Nice Intelligent Educated Driver Not Engineered ######...lol:biggrin_25525:

this is what I do sometimes sitting at a dock when I'm bored and it's amusing to me.

If they allow you to leave it there and it isn't needed at home, you may have to leave it there if they allow personal cars if you do leave out with your trainer from there. They may want a set of keys left at a guard shack or office just in case the car had to be moved in an emergency. If nothing else request home time and be routed to the terminal and pickup your car and have someone bring you back. We have done the 5 hrs one way in the past from a terminal where someone had to pick us up.

This is a website I use a lot to track down truckstops, rest areas, etc. It has been real handy, just remember not all the truckstops have truckparking at them. And not all Walmarts have parking either, but do have a phone number you can call and check if perhaps you can (that is if the whole store is on board with this). www.findfuelstops.com

You will have to check and see if you can even park at your house due to zoning laws in cities. Once you have your own truck the closest T/S to you from Charlotte, NC is the Petro at Mebane, NC, it is about 20 miles from Chapel Hill, and it is according to what direction you are coming from to get home as to what town is closer for you. You may have famiy check around the area and see if there is anything around you. The Wilco-Hess chain are usually just a turn-key operation with no parking available.

You may get away with parking the tractor at your house if you can find a secure location for the trailer and a lot of T/S will not allow you to drop a trailer and leave it unattended; and then it is according to what time you get there as to whether you will find a parking spot or not. You will need to find out if the company allows you to bobtail or not also.

Most companies when you go on hometime will schedule you to a location for a delivery and then deadhead you home where you can park the truck at a T/S then and have someone pick you up. If you have a lot of electronics in the truck you may need to turn things off like the refrig so it doesn't drain the batteries. Close the curtains is the best idea and that way no one knows if you are in the truck or not, unless they have been there for awhile themselves.

When you go back on company time, they will schedule you a load to pickup then. Most companies like to keep the empty miles down to a premium as to the fuel costs.

Not all companies operate the same so you need to check this out with them to see if you put in say for to be home on a Friday morning, what time would you be expected to be ready and available for the next load out. You will most likely only have about a 34 hr period off between last delivery and then be available for the next p/u, but I know some companies advertise more days off also. And then of course you maybe ready at 8am for a load and not get a load till 2pm. A message would need to be sent in at least 2-3 weeks before you need the day off and in some cases a reminder later on.

Good luck with the new job; it is a good way to see a lot of the country.

I am in about the same situation as you of not having room for a trailer, but I can park my truck at my house because I live out in the county. When I go home, I either deliver to a customer close to my house that is a drop and just bobtail home from there or if I have a live unload, then they send me somewhere to drop the trailer where a customer needs one. Just talk to your DBL when you get assigned a truck and they can put notes in the system that you need to bobtail home when you take hometime.

My husband just finished orientation at that OC. He had a day and a half break before he got with his trainer. In which he was picked up at the OC. I think it depends on who they partner you with, where they are, where they are going, etc. As far as our personal vehicle it is still sitting at the OC. This weekend I have a friend taking me there to pick it up. It's only a 2 hour ride for us.

We have a drop yard in Greensboro, they might have you park the truck there and drive home. Not sure if that works for you or if they'd make you do that. There's also one in Wilson but that's probably farther from you.
