$70 a day per diem coming off the first 40 and 30 hours tax free could make for some sweet driver paychecks. Will the industry allow this ?
-
Only if it’s considered OT by your employer.
Speedy356 Thanks this. -
Like every other labor law, mileage drivers will be exempt.
Hilltop Hustler, Tb0n3, Gearjammin' Penguin and 4 others Thank this. -
You’d have to be an hourly employee just like now. Nothing changes for mileage or percentage employees
brian991219, cuzzin it and Arctic_fox Thank this. -
So what about tanker yankers and others where there is hourly pay ? Did that just become the best pay in trucking ?
-
So looks like this is gonna end up passing as of this morning.
Obviously this won’t help drivers paid by the load or mile, but what about us hourly employees who do currently get OT? Will we get no taxes on it, or will the government say our companies aren’t required to pay us OT by law, and only choose to, therefore we still pay tax on all of it
I currently work 60 hours a week on average.
Company pays OT after 40. No tax on OT would be 40% of my wages tax free…..Last edited: Jul 1, 2025

It all depends on your state. In BC they don’t do OT until 50 hrs and Alberta it’s 40 for Highway driving. Rest assured someone, somewhere is thinking of a way to Screw you.

I think it should apply to your company as well since they have the OT policy. They also should reap the benefit of the no tax on OT since they have to match a portion of your taxes. Looks like a win winjamin22 Thanks this.
