Don't fret about me, I know if I got issues.
Seriously, the only reason your company pushes this stuff, you've already mentioned. Liability

If you heard some of the responses I have about brakes.
Last week I talked to a guy that was asking questions about my truck because it was similar to his. I asked him if he had Drum or Disk? He didn't know! -
It’s not just my company, remember that some of these areas are under video surveillance by certain states. They’re getting fed up with cleaning up all the wrecks!

Coming off the west side of Donner is interesting. It really helps to know the hill because there are places that you can let it roll out and things will cool. It's not just one long consistent grade. It is pretty well marked though, or at least it was in the 90s when I last ran there.
The Nyack brake check area as I recall is at the end of one of the flatter sections, and acts as a warning that "You're not done with the steeper stuff yet". I used to use it as a place to stretch my legs and check things out before diving into the lowlands. -
You assume that this nit wit knows how to adjust a brake…….
And there’s a line of thinking that if a slack adjuster needs to be adjusted it’s junk…..and should be replacedOxbow Thanks this. -
It depends. I personally get out of the truck and try to look at every wheel drum underneath the tractor and trailer and look for signs of overheating(where applicable).
I say “where applicable” because some of our equipment is going through a “transitional period”. Our tractors are switching over from drum brakes to disc brakes-the last tractor I had had disc brakes on the steers but drums on the drives. My current tractor has disc brakes all around. Our trailer fleet is transitioning as well-switching from drum/S-cam setup to disc brake/calipers. -
I have one truck that still has manual slack adjusters, and to be honest I don't mind them. The days of carrying a 9/16ths in the side box right there handy must be over?Lol
I will probably never get the opporunity now, but I would have liked to try out disk brakes.D.Tibbitt and Big Road Skateboard Thank this. -
That’s because you have the experience that a lot of these newer drivers that seldom or never go through mountainous terrain don’t!
-
Gotcha. I've only been down Donner once. Now that i think about it, there may be pull offs on 17?? from Flagstaff to Phoenix.
And I don't mean to scoff at the importance of safety. It's just the foolishness that seriously most drivers dont care.
Coming down Dead Mans Pass, I can roll 28-30 with 48k and never touch my brakes, yet all I smell all the way to Pendleton is hot brakes from the idiots who don't care. -
I have less than two years experience, and had zero training, I'm just not completely stupid.PaulMinternational and Oxbow Thank this.
