I learned to go down mountains on a truck with no Jake brake. By the time I had a truck with one I'd been down Wolf Creek and most of the other west cost downhills including Donner. And I always thought that Donner is one of the easiest. Don't know if they still exist, but there used to even be signs letting truckers know what's ahead. Even one telling them to crank it up for an upgrade ahead. As far as stopping at that brake check, taking a few minutes for a walk around to check your truck is a lot less time than it takes to get a ticket. or worse.

Walking papers is the least of his worries, just as him not checking his brakes the last time he stopped or more than likely was going down the hill too fast. A brake check at the top does make them more cautious going down the hill. A driver shoul;d always know the condition of his equipment.
I see these guys go flying by me on the downhills like the Grapevine or Cabbage all the time, there lack of ability and poor judgement have more to do with there crashes thaan missing a brake check. If you check your equipment properly and exerecise good judgement you will never have these problems, had a guy pass me on 58 west this morning about a mile east of Gen Beal Road with smoke just rolling off his brakes from the drives back, only one thinbg causes that too much speed on a down hill. They had him off the highway around weedpatch, looked like he might have been headed for a stay with CHP.
