I think this is why they require us to stop at those areas, and I totally agree with that rationale. After all, most carriers don't provide their drivers with the necessary training to be certified brake inspectors so that would call into question the validity of any inspection or adjustment made by a non-certified driver.

Most companies used to include some brake adjustment training, videos, etc as part of their orientation. Then give the driver a card stating that he had been trained and that the company allowed the driver to do brake adjustments. I don't think many companies do this anymore. Probably out of fear of potential litigation, they don't want their drivers touching the brakes.
Some years back I was put OOS for out of adjustment brakes at Limon, Co. I told the cop that I would adjust them myself and he wanted to see that card where the company gave me the ok to do it. He seemed surprised when I showed him my card and said he didn't see many of them anymore.

Some of these companies I'm surprised they still allow the drivers to top off the oil and coolant. They wont even let them replace a bad light.

Bendix came out to our place and put on a class. We got together with a couple of our competitors and a couple of vendors to meet the minimum class size.
Bendix did a good job. Videos, mockups, yard practice, the whole works. They even laid on pizza and sodas at lunch time.
At the close of the day we all took a very simple test and got a little card saying we'd attended the class. It doesn't say that you're a registered brake technician or a repair man. It just gives the date of the class and other information
I checked with our local DOT guy and he said they were familiar with the Bendix class and that they'd accept the card.

We had to watch a safety video on the Bendix braking and collision mitigation systems before we were given our trucks.
