Just wondering what has been your worst trucking experience ever. Don't have one personally. Even if you don't have one yourself, but know of one go ahead and post it.

I don't drive truck. That is why I'm posting in general public questions. That doesn't mean I don't know drivers and stories. The ones I know are from other drivers I know or met somewhere:

    1) In the same weekend. This driver got stuck in his own driveway. The air suspension bag got too cold and cracked. The check engine light turned on.

    2) Second hand story from a driver I know. A driver was parked in the dock waiting she was told to park in. Another driver from a different company was backiing into the dock next to her. He hit the back of her trailer. Her company fired her calling it a preventable even though she was where she was suppose to be and not moving.

    3) This driver was with a trainer at the time. It was in the middle of winter, and the roads froze quickly, and near white out conditions. Trucks and cars started to slide. The truck in front breaked. The driver with the trainer had to react fairly quickly, or was going to hit the truck in front of him. He saw the left lane clear, and steared towards that. Got in the left lane, and the truck straightened out. It slid past the other truck in a straight line. After he got in front, went back in the right land and rode on the rumble strip until he was able to slow down and stop safely. He said they both were shaking after that, and he had white knuckle syndrom.

Honestly, this probably isn't my worst moment but probably the strangest. I was up 1 of those northern states, and I had just delivered, then I went up the road about a block and parked so this other driver could get in the dock. Right after I parked, I went in the sleeper to catch up on my log. I sat there for maybe a minute and suddenly I felt this huge crash. I looked outside to c who had just crashed into my trailer. Well I actually did the crashing. When I got out I was a block away from where I was when I parked the truck. I had forgotten to put on the air brakes, and coasted right smack dab into the middle of the trailer I had just let in the dock. I guess the weirdest part might hav been when the driver said,'hey don't worry, it happens all the time' I said, 'U don't want me to report the accident?' I looked at the trailer and there were huge dents in it, I wouldn't consider it inspection ready by a longshot. He said'Oh, don't worry about it, that's nothing.' For some reason he really didn't want the cops to come. I hope he got that thing where it needed to go w/out too much hassle, especially cuz whatever he was hiding. That was 1 of my few lucky days in trucking.

Thanks for replying. That was a really lucky break for you. That must have been one good truck if you didn't notice it rolling back on you while sitting in it.

I live in PA near the snow belt. Be careful when testing the road. Watch out for black ice that can look like a wet road. I know of some places where it would be safer not to test anything.

You talked about going 60, and slowing down if you start to skid. For some reason it brought back a very old memeory of a story my great uncle use to tell me about his trucking days. I don't know if he even had to drive under any HOS rules.

It was Christmas time. His truck and trailer were all decked out in Christmas lights. He had a load due, and decided to drive all through the night. Hardly any one was on the roads, and it was late at night. The roads were a little snowy, but he diceded to travel well above the speed limit.

He got talking to a man a guy on the CB. The guy asked him if he was the one all decked out with the Christmas lights. He admited yes. He started to call my uncle Christmas lights. They started #### chating. My uncle fessed up to speeding and a couple of other things. He asked the guy if there were any smokies around. The guy said yes, I've been following you. Then my uncle heard police car whistles. The officer told him to pull over on the CB.

Needless to say, he got put in jail with Big Bubba, who considered the entire cell his turf. Everyone else was afraid of Big Bubba. He wouldn't say much more, except he stood up to Big Bubba. He lived to tell the tale. :pirate:

I don't know if that was a trucker story just to amuse a little girl, or if that was a real story. He had a lot of them though. That is the only one I can remember.

I don't know why, but I do like hearing the trucker stories.

When I was driving in South Africa, I made the mistake of leaving Cape Town at night. Six bullet holes in the sleeper was what I counted when I finally let off the accelerator and figured it was time to regain my composure. There were seven, though - I missed one with my count.

First year I bought my truck. Rolling down the road and the motor starts knocking bad. Call the service truck and he says I dropped a valve. $15k later and the truck is running again. Didn't have to worry bout paying taxes that year cause there was no profit. Still making payments on that one. Not a good day.

Other than that, it would be Jan 4th 2009. We just had freezing rain and I was picking up milk in a quad at 3a.m. I'm driving down a gravel road and the conditions go from bad to really bad about a mile before my next stop. I crawl to the farm and get ready to back uphill into this driveway that's about 200 yds long. I get about 20 feet up and spin out, the proceed to slide down the driveway, across the road, and the front end goes into the ditch. No biggie, I'll just chain up and go right up. Put all my chains on and I get out of the ditch and start backing up the driveway, I'm spinning, but at least I'm moving. Problem is with chains and both axles fully locked my steering wheel had become useless. Get out and throw down one of the 50# bags of lime from the tool box. Make it in. Now my next obstacle is a couple rolling hills that are fairly steep on my way back out to the highway. I get 3/4 up the first one (fully chained and all 4 axles locked) and I spin out, hit the brakes, but still start to slid backwards. The problem is with my brakes applied as I slid backwards my front wheels are locked and the front end starts to come around. I have no choice but to let go of the brakes and coast backwards down the hill and pray that I can keep it straight till I get to the bottom. Made it down, and got up the hill on my second try. Now one more hill before the highway. It swept to the right with snow piled up in the right hand ditch, and a drop off into the woods on the left. This time I only got half way up before spinning out. I tapped the brake and it held me from rolling back but my front immediately swung around into the snow bank in the right ditch. Now I sit cross ways in the middle of a hill, front end in the snowbank, and drop off behind me. Get out and throw whatever lime I had left in my toolbox under the front tires so I could turn out of the ditch. I creep backwards, wheels slowly sliding up out of the ditch. By some miracle I manage not to go off the drop behind me, put it in 1st and use every ounce of traction 8 wheels and chains can muster to spin my way to the top. The route took about 4 hours longer than usual that day.
