I think she is more upset that nobody recognized her.

I think you all are missing the point about Oprah. It was that even someone with mega bucks like her, because she is black, the clerk assumed she didn't have the financial means to pay for that obscenely price purse. You'd think you might have some empathy for her since the general public assumes that all truck drivers are filthy, brainless twits.

No offense to all the filthy, brainless, twit truck drivers out there. :biggrin_25525:

The trucking industry is simply following in the foot steps of many other enterprises where a bachelors degree is mandatory without regard to actual experience and common sense. Not that I would ever knock someone with a college degree since that would be akin to knocking myself, but there's lots of stupid that for some even schooling doesn't extinguish.

    Welcome ya'll!

PTL (Paschall Truck Lines) would hire you. You would probably hire on as a refresher but they would help you out if you need it.

The big reason was that oprah was upset because the woman didn't recognize her. Thus she wanted to make a big deal about it.

go to a flatbed parking yard, or a shipper/receiver where flatbeds come in and out, write down company names and home terminals on their signs, google them and start calling away. forget big companies with all the gizmos and insurance crap. small fleets would pay better, have more miles and hire you on the spot. good luck

Really? Where does she say that?

What she got a taste of is how an average black woman would be treated at such an establishment and understands as "Oprah", people know she could well afford the stupid bag. Thus, the woman didn't recognize her and treated her in her usual manner, making assumptions based on her skin color. Not much of a fan of Oprah, but it's hardly because the woman didn't recognize her is the "big" reason.

:biggrin_25524: Wife was watching it last night , Oprah made reference to the " OPRAH show" being seen around the WORLS including Sweden so she ( the clerk ) should have known who she was .

Oprah is overreacting. The owner of the store said the clerk doesn't speak English well due to the fact that she was Italian. What the clerk was trying to tell Oprah was there were less expensive versions in ostrich leather and suede.

I live in Chicago, a very diverse city. As a minority, I face no racism other than from black people. They call racism for the stupidest things. I picked a blue pen over a black pen.....I was called a racist. I was telling a black woman that I like sweet potato pie for Thanksgiving.....I'm a racist. I think their over-sensitive. I'm sure this incident that happened to Oprah was a misunderstanding.

I've spoken to a few people at TMC. Qualifications aren't a big problem but they don't want me due to where I live. I'm in Wisconsin about an hour and a half north of I94. The recruiter said I would see home about once a month. Some of the problem there is the local companies have the local freight locked up for pennies, which is mostly lumber and paper. I tried driving for one of them but the truck was a giant piece of crap. I had a post a little while ago about that. I've been checking CSA's on companies before contacting them and from the looks of things you'd think they would be happy to have a driver with experience and a clean record. Especially a driver who doesn't hit stuff.

I agree with flatbed. As much as I would like to blame the trucking industry alone and the DOT, FMCSA, etc. simply increasing the hoops that drivers have to go through, it's society. Everyone wants a perfect world and what's a perfect world without safety? To most people, going to an 'official school' means you'll be safe.

Stupid, but that's the reality. That's the world we live in....
