Ok, thanks for everyones responses. I get it now. It's basically a rolling 7/8 day window that always has to be under 60/70 hours. I'll also take a look at that smartphone app 379exhd was talking about

They should have done away with the 34 and made it 48. Because in the end that pretty much is how much 75% of the drivers will take.

Yeah, the other 25% of us don't matter. While we're at it, lets just outlaw owner ops altogether. Because pretty much 75% of drivers are company drivers, anyway. Ditto for outlawing anything else that < 25% of people want to do.:biggrin_25510:

It's really very simple. You can "work" up to 70 hrs in 8 days. So, if you look at the previous 8 days and you are under 70 hours, you're good to go, IF, you have hours available. This is why you need to re-cap your hours. You'll be able to see how many available hours you have for the next day. It might be a full 11 or could be less, anywhere from 30 minutes to 11 hours. A busy driver will more than likely be "bumping" his 70 constantly. A few things come into play, such as how much time you have to deliver your load. If you only pick-up 4 hours today, for instance, and have 2 more days to go 500 miles, you will be OK, if, you pick up enough hours the following day. A 34 hr re-set can help you or hinder you. Depends on the situation.

For those that miles mean something. For those that work on maximizing the rate per mile instead of just turning miles, then the less than 9 hr a day thing is very realistic. Some don't even come close to using all their 70 in an 8 day period. But those tied to the company driver mindset of "gotta turn more miles", it could be a problem. Good time for those folks to rethink things and figure out if they want to start running their own operation, hooking up with someone that they can actually make a living without ever taking a reset, or just give up on all of it and find another line of work. All are viable options.

Yep. In other words, the way the trucking community did it from 1938 to 2003. Just roll the hours, keep a recap, and work when you had it available. Nothing new and original here.

That new restart rule is kind of nuts for people like me that don't generally sleep between 1 and 5 am. The only way for me to get a restart will be to either come off the restart tired or extend it to 40-something hours. If I was still a company driver, I would have to either start every week tired or start every week with an angry dispatcher.

Why government would want to impose either is beyond me. I don't work hard enough to need to worry about a restart, but this will be bad news for some.
