Remember that very well. Also gas lines and rationing, odd even days. That was the greater San Francisco Bay Area for quite some time. @InTooDeep has a couple of years on me.
That government cheese and butter, plus a bunch of other commodities was a regular thing. While my family was not qualified, my grandparents were. They used to get so much of it, it was given to all the rest of the family. That cheese actually made the best Mac n Cheese.
