Lol... Man let me tell ya, that was the most nerve racking experience ive had in a long time. This is the first time I've ever tried to do dyed background or 2-tone dye work. And to make it worse my 4 and 2 year old sons were running around and under my feet the entire time.

Ive seen both these things done by a saddle maker on his youtube channel... An you can bet I watched those videos again before starting it myself.

This is after a coat of olive oil. It really helped even out the English Bridle (brown) dye.

I would not have thought one could manage colors into leather that close. Like it would run/absorb across/smudge. Probably do all three if I tried.

Thanks man, really appreciate it. Ive been very nervous about trying sone of these techniques on any custom orders I've had. But since this one is a surprise gift for my Dad, I decided to pull out all the stops and go all in on it.

The key is to use a very fine pointed brush and to start in the center of each area. That first touch of dye bleeds like crazy, but being that the leather is compressed from the backgrounding stamp it can only really bleed so much. Also learning how to load the brush with the right amount of dye... Better to have not enough than too much.

Outstanding—your dad is going to have to go out and buy a new rifle to put it on — and then take it off and put it on his favorite— what I would do
