I joined the Air Force at 17 in 1975. Our family dog at the time was 5. He and I did a lot of exploring over the years from 1970 until 1975. One day while still in basic training my father told me via a phone conversation that the dog was depressed. My sister picked me up at the bus station when I first came home after basic and technical school. I got out of the car and walked around to the rear of the car and said his name. All I can say is I got greeted. We had to put that dog down in 1985. I remember going home and my dad telling me he was under the house and would not come out. So I went under the house and got him. My father said he did not have the heart to do it, but he said we had to do something. I carried that dog on one last ride to the Vet. I got out and asked his helper if he had time to do it. I went and got the dog and we did it. That was hard enough but I also knew we had nowhere to bury him. Just not able to dig deep enough to bury him deep enough to stop a wild animal from digging him up later. So I asked the vet what did he recommend. He said he had a place way out on his land where he does burials. He buried several a week there. Used a backhoe to dig deep. I have seen the area and he does respect that these were pets. That day after rubbing his belly that one last time I cried all the way home. It felt like a piece of my childhood had died. I still to this day laugh at some of the memories of that dang dog!
