Some time in say 56/57's Cummins came with with a little hot rod engine, think it was called a JT something. At any rate, it was marketed toward replacing
the RD450 gas in the R190-200 IH. Had to get used to driving it, as the stock 5 and 2 speed was slow for its response. Get in it, adapt, and it did a good job and was a DIESEL... 5th direct, 5.57 rear, 22" rubber put it out at about 58 t0 60 MPH. Pulled in that range very well.

However, John D. Turner of Starkville, MS produce fame got him one. So proud. He and I and Shorty Moore left Lakeland one night all for Minneapolis.
You boys wanta run up there together? Sure; but you lead, don't know if we can keep up with that diesel. He smiles and we pull out. 1st stop to be about midnight up in AL. So we line out. I am in that #33 IHV8 and Moore is in it's sister #35 that I towed in from Ft Wayne. V8 engine, 8 speed RR, 22 inch rubber. Bumped the governor with speedo tapping the zero of 70. Would do that pulling a flatbed with 400 bags of cottonseed meal out of Buckeye Cotton Oil in Clarksdale, ME down to Greenwood. Dead flat delta road.
Any way; we all toddle along, working the traffic as we catch it. Just for the hell of it, I got an opening, pulled up along side John D, (wide open in 7th) seesawed a time or to, dropped it in 8th and walked on off. An hour or so later when Moore and I stopped, he was not in sight.
First words were, I want to drive one of them things a ways....Late night fun across Alabama.....
Dumas Milner was shaking that Pine Sol to CA in 57 with 3 of them in cab forward IH 195's. Had them turned up to high. Would run like a striped ape, but 2nd trip, new engine....

dwells40, Feedman, homeskillet and 5 others Thank this.

What kind of truck owners leave their trash everywhere?

We hold these truths to be self evident.

Wind around Flagstaff is in Stage I howl.

Except that stretch about 20 miles to the east, that's about 40 miles long. That's Arizona's Elk Mountain spot, where it goes SUPER TURBO.

That area is in Stage II howl.
