I thought about starting a thread for this. Then I realized, nah, I don’t really like leaving this and the “where are you” thread. Besides you guys will enjoy making fun of me.
Let me start by saying that spending a year a Western woefully prepared me for this next step at Landstar.
I can make a truck go forward and backwards safely. I understand the meanings to some acronyms and I can make sounds with my mouth that would lead some people to believe that I I know what I’m doing.
That’s about it.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the good and bad.
The bad:
I’ve made several key mistakes just to being new. Things like time mismanagement, poor route planning, and inadequate communication with agents, shippers and receivers. None of these mistakes are fatal, but the norm I became used to was a very low bar. Dave has been incredibly helpful, and patient. He also definitely doesn’t pull a single punch which I appreciate. His greatest attribute so far has been explaining his methodology in great detail. For me it’s been a real masters class.
The good:
I’m either early, or on time for pick ups and deliveries. No service failures. All products have arrived in as shipped condition.

Here’s some advice for new drivers or those thinking about going this route. Take this with a grain of salt. I’ve got so much to learn...
If you think you’re going to get your CDL and go straight to owner/operator...good luck. I’m a pretty smart guy, I’ve got a great work ethic, I have an incredible amount of patience, and I have the vehicle control of someone who raced for most of his life. My wife says one of my superpowers is the ability to admit when I made a mistake or was wrong and then listen intently to not make the same mistake again. 30 years of business experience is also part of my resume. If I was doing this without Dave as a mentor/safety net I would be so in over my head. Dave called this big boy trucking, I think I would call it the deep end of the ocean as well. This is how I feel with (1) year of experience. I can’t imagine going straight into this.
All of this is also with the realization that Dale (truck #3) has run flawlessly. Which has been awesome.
To quote Dave “don’t worry you’ll get it put up your ###”. Then he laughs as he recounts some of his breakdowns or issues.
The biggest hurdle is I don’t know what I don’t know yet. That includes picking my own freight. Dave dispatches me thankfully.
What’s ####ed up is I thought I knew something. Turns out I was kinda wrong, but I bet you guys already knew that.RidgeRunner731, Accidental Trucker, dwells40 and 8 others Thank this.
