Not necessarily in the fall, I guess I am just glad for the extra hour of sleep! Absolutely hate going front in the spring! And the only thing in my life that is set in stone is 1) I go to church Sunday morning, and 2) milking time is pretty hardline. Other than that, I plumb don’t have a schedule… work when I’m awake, (or the money is good) and sleep where it fits in. talk about being screwed up on time zones, hauling seed corn, I would cross time zone line 4-8 times a night. After a while, I wouldn’t remember whether I was coming or going. I enjoy it though, and maybe someday I’ll get old and be able to tell “tall tales” to young bucks that want to drive 8-5 and make a qtr million a year lol. My “lack of a schedule” will likely stop in 1-2 years, when my son goes to school. If I can pick up some more farm ground, I might stop hauling for hire entirely eventually and just work for my self, but it takes money to get there! (Which is what I’m trying to acquire)

I have thought about trying to find a good driver, and keeping the truck rolling, but there are 2 things that are holding me back from that. 1: I am worried I will get a driver like @Judge FnG. 2: My truck has treated me well, but it isn’t new, and while I can see what it’s doing in the checking account, and put up with its idiosyncrasies, (such as the a/c stubbornly refusing to allow itself to be fixed) I can’t expect a driver to view it the same. Which pretty much means I would either have to buy another truck, or pump $25,000+ into fixing little details on the old one. :dontknow: And it’s paid for, and I need a farm truck, so it might just get relegated to that. I do intend to keep my numbers active, just in case…

I’m certainly no expert in either, but have had both. 1.) children get more expensive as they get older. 2.) drivers have very poor ROI.

so get used to working all the time. Be it driving a truck or milking a cow or digging an outhouse. You will have very little time for anything else. And if your wife is a stay home mom you will have very little money. So it doesn’t matter if you have time or not.

Wife is a stay at home mom, but I guess I married up when I met her! She was raised on a farm, and will gladly help with farm work as necessary. I enjoy seeing how much can get accomplished in a day, but after we have a child in school, I think it would be best if I wasn’t running flat out all over the place all the time. I have been adding more cows slowly, milk price is currently good, and eventually I want to farm full time. I thoroughly enjoy trucking, but we have 3 sons, and I want to help them grow up to be decent members of society. And I think working on the farm with them, I can teach them more than seeing them occasionally while I’m on the road.

That’s commendable. Mine are 19 almost 20 now. I missed a lot, but they were raised by their momma and not a day care. They didn’t get all they wanted but had all they needed. I could have chosen not to drive, but circumstances dictated that I had to choose. Have them raise by a stranger or have them raised by their mom.
