Excuse me, sir. You seem to have OH-HI-OH confused with San Fran or NYC.

WE do NOT have "hobo camps".

What we DO have, is a network of strategically placed milk crates and cinderblocks, where independent contractors can solicit funds from passing motorists by means of holding an illegible cardboard sign.

I don't think it's state run....I'm pretty sure the guy in the white van that drops them all off holds the master franchise.

Probably like booth rent in a barber shop kinda deal.....

If you keep your windows up, you shouldn't drown.

Ok, first you have to cut it back to the joist on the left and right. On the left side, you're almost there. On the right side you've got about 8 inches to go. On the north side, you need to either find a joist, or scab one in there. On the south side you should be fine because it goes into the frame of the house.
Long story short, you need something to nail your drywall to.
You might actually find a piece of drywall at Lowes or whatever that has been damaged and they're willing to let it go at a discounted price. (Or, you could go into Lowes and seripitously bust up some drywall and then go in the next day and ask if they have any busted up drywall they're willing to let go at a deeply discounted price.....your call).

Anyway, putting the ceiling back together is not going to be the challenge. Your biggest problem will be getting the popcorn ceiling right. And for that, you're probably going to want a pro.

In the meantime, Rockey the Raccoon stopped by....
