    About the mesh. I'm not sure. I'm kind of lazy. I'm thinking filling the gaps and use the popcorn stuff. Otherwise remove popcorn on old. Then mud and tape. Mud again and sand. Then popcorn.

    Yeah putting a sister 2 x 4 for the ability to screw into it. Would be a good idea. I thought about that afterwords. I have done that on floor repairs.
