Way back when (1955/56) I went thru Huntsville, AL often. This was pre any thru routes or the 4 lane elevated bypass of US72.
Somewhere down there in town is a corner where you turn left to go on north up US 231. Also on that set of supporting post were other ? 31 routings like 231, 331, 431, plus a couple of AL state routes and the US 72 you were on. I believe in all my years of driving in all the places I drove, that was the most highway direction signs on one set of posts.
Quizzed Google on how many variations and was referred to the below link. Quite an experience to see how highway numbers are set or reset.
