Y'all used paper routes. I did the late night wrecker service.. We lived outside West Point a ways, and nearby was 2 gravel roads that were trafficked as "Lover Lanes " parking. Inclement weather, a little drinkee, and the whiff of some "onder yonder" would put the wheels in the ditch. Upon completion, wheels would not come out of the ditch. So, walk down and ask the farmer for a pull.
My old farming Daddy did not provide tow service, but blessed me with all the business. He said if you want to crank the tractor and go pull him out, go ahead. Mark wanted to know how much, Daddy said $10.00. Daddy was not heavy in religion, but did price our neighborhood morality level at $10.00.
All went well, till... I pulled one out, unhooked the chain and as I placed it back on the tractor he drove off. Lesson learned.
The 10 came over before the chain was slacked, let alone unhooked. I remember once the guy only had $7.00 on him.
(That is why say up until about age 70, I always kept a 20 in my watch pocket. Figured the farms boys with diesel tractors had gone up some.)Sons Hero, IH9300SBA, exhausted379 and 14 others Thank this. -
