The Army has an amazing C and A (Classification and Assignment) system, usually managed/run by a PFC with < 6 months in.
Actually it is simple, if you are from the Gulf coast and can speak Swahili fluently, it is easy to assign you to the Swiss Alps as a yodeler...

Fairly decent 7 yr truck driver: is taught to drive an auto shift deuce &1/2, and weekly KP, then offered Electronics in Ft Monmouth NJ or Traffic Analysis, Devens. Monmouth is transfer, more KP, and 2 more weeks for school start. Devens is here, starts Tuesday. I stayed took Devens.
