Well.. You find a hole. A hollow deep enough to shield the wind. Ere on the east coast the incoming storm wind is out of the NE so you hide under a ridge steep and taller than you. Such as might be cut out of a mountain shopping center.
Wait a while. As the eye progresses and the wind shifts from SW you have a problem. usually a tall building at the corner of said shopping center go around that corner with the trailer at 15 degrees angle away from building so if it falls you can still get out. Ride baby ride with your landing gear down.
Do not take that truck out of whatever wind break big enough to take the wind off you. Stay. Its going to be really violent so... just have a marker with your SSN on your left lower arm.
Once in Erie near the NY line on the buffalo road I got caught with no place to put her and parking zip in a raging blizzard. #### wind howled out of the NW with mountains of snow. I was literally off road forcing that big dollar truck onto a field above the 76 to the north with the trailer pointed directly into the wind. It was a last effort and we will see the morning light one way or another with the whole thing pointed downhill so we could get out.
I did not sleep a wink that night.
But the ultimate was in Seville/Akron OH one night about 1995 spring. There are or were 4 truckstops together off I think 77 there. speedway, 76, old ta and I think pilot. Sun went down dispatch says have a GOOD day off you did good that week, like a thousand dollars pending or so.
Nope. The NOAA radio wailed all night with tornados walking the earth past our valley. Talk about tornado terror. After a while I see 3 trucks down a gasoline tanker, 2 trucks up some kind of nitro liquid fuel and a couple of others with diamonds that I had to look up. I simply put the book away, All I was doing is scaring myself. HA...
Sun came up.
Dispatch was cheery., MORNING! *GRUMP..... What a night.
My personal favorite is this... you wont believe it.
Near Scranton PA is a little rest area, quiet and usually non gravel coffee. (Ugh...) 70 degrees at night screens in wide open windows dressed lightly in bed happy as a clam. Next morning see tractor interior in a few inches of snow, tractor drives in about 4 or 5 inches of solid ice and so on. 20 degrees. Surprise!!!!
I managed to get her out. She would not out until I recalled in Alaska the hee and haw to break sleds loose from a story. So I spun the wheel all the way over, applied stump pulling power and CRTACK! thats one. Spun wheel the other way And added more stumps. CRACK! thats two. Now we try backwards. SMACK! that threee. now can we get out? CRACK the tractor was free but the trailer slid on a ice cake.
That cake took about 20 miles to grind off. Boy were the cars unhappy.
What if it Snows?

I save the holiday screw ups for last.
Christmas Eve. In the 90's pick any old year it silly to try this or that year.
Im rolling south. On the JTP. Hit the last toll and before the DMB a little old lady got out of her car to fumble change or something in the toll barrier. Cars and buses etc piled up around her. Paid her no mind and rolled south. By the time I get out of Delaware and into Maryland I noticed cars stopping dead on that side NB as fast as I am rolling south. By Baltimore this whole thing is JAMMED. By Richmond the radio was crying about how 95 does not function tonight. It was still JAMMED.
I don't know how long it took to get that cleared out. I sure hate to blame a nice old granny for stacking 95 shut in 5 states...Dave_in_AZ, dwells40 and FerrissWheel Thank this. -
