The cameras for the Apollo 11 mission's first steps were not held by a second astronaut but were mounted on the lunar module's descent stage itself. A special black-and-white TV camera, housed in the Modular Equipment Stowage Assembly (MESA), was deployed by Armstrong by pulling a lanyard, which allowed it to swing down and record his descent. This camera transmitted the iconic grainy footage of Armstrong's historic walk to Earth.

Well I went across 80 in Indiana and Ohio. So much 45 mph construction, I probably should have just hit US 30. I did a 7 hour break. Now I'm hoping I can sit in a dock for 3 hours. Food warehouse. We shall see.

 

I can remember watching John Glenn splash down after being the first American to orbit the earth. I was in elementary school first or second grade, all of us in the lunch room watching a tiny black and white tv . I can remember him coming out of the capsule and he wasn't wearing a parachute, I knew at that moment I didn't want to be a astronaut.

 

I remember bits and pieces of Neil’s walk cause I was getting ready to start 1st grade in Apache Junction and we hadn’t made it to Penny’s yet to get school clothes and I didn’t give a a F about some goofy marshmallow man I wanted my new Levi’s and Keds— July of 69

 

50 degrees at the homestead this morning. I remember being forced to watch the moon landing because my parents thought it was important being 11 years old I thought working on scrounging materials for a bigger better ramp for bicycle jumping was much better use of my time.
