Nope, groove on the valve stem. You got them faced, the block or seat ground shiny, drop in the valve, worked the spring up around the stem,. applied the device, then finger nutted the two little keepers into the groove .Released the device and hoped you got them seated well. If not repeat till did or 5 o'clock...
