Funny story that. Its actually not the commandment to be extra nice that many Christians believe it is.
At that time the Roman law said that a soldier was legally allowed to conscript a Jew to carry his pack for 1 mile. Only 1. Because the Jew would have to walk back to his home or farm or whatever. So 1 mile was allowed...but 2 miles could get the Roman soldier in trouble.
Now imagine what it would look like for a soldier to be wrestling that pack off the Jew or pleading with him. Very undignified...
So...it was actually a suggestion for civil disobedience...

Not demeaning in the least. Just contrary to the conviction that conservatives are all about the principles of our founding and a desire to stick with what they came up with 300 years ago. Not what hysteria produced less than 100 years ago...

Just watch those street interviews by Jay Leno...the youngsters don'tknow their history or even geography,odds are good they were as attentive during the times when numbers were being discussed.
