That's exactly what I'm asking. After a year you will still be in the same spot working for the burger joint. You will still be working close to minimum wage. Now is that true for the trucking job too? I keep hearing after a year you can get better jobs. Is that true?

Well you may not be in the same spot working for the burger joint. They do have management positions come along, and on a fairly regular basis, if you are an intelligent and dependable employee.

Depending on the size of the franchise company you are working for, you can actually work your way into a pretty darn good paying job. Some of these store managers not only make a good regular paycheck, but are also on a profit sharing or bonus basis that actually pays much more than the pay check does.

We all think of the "burger flippers" as being either the pimply faced high school kids who are working part time, the developmentally challenged folks who are actually being helped out by the employer, or the down and out last-hired-first-fired type of employee. But you get somebody in there who is on the ball, there really is a future there. And some folks actually LIKE the business.(shudddddddder)

Now as far as trucking is concerned, it used to be that if you had a good year under your belt with one of the driver mill companies, you could move on to a better job pretty easy. But take a look at what you are seeing over and over again on this forum. Drivers are losing jobs, companies are closing. Guys who have ten to twenty or more years experience are having to start all over again, and at rookie wages. Not a good scenario right now.

Of course we all HOPE the economy will turn around, and you do need to have some sort of a job. But don't come into this business with the idea that within a year you will have "paid your dues" and can "write your own ticket." Ain't gonna happen. Even if the economy DOES turn around. It's going to take a long time for things to come back.

It's possible but not as likely as it once was . Fewer drivers are moving from the good jobs . Read enough posts and you will see some drivers are making less than they were 20 years ago . In a burger joint you could move up to management or at least be around town to jump at any opportunities if they appear . Most good job openings in trucking will go to somebody that knows somebody . Your chances are slim without a strong personal reference .

Probably get one or two free meals per day while working at the burger joint also.
But think about it, work in a closed in hot grille or living the great lifestyle of a truck driver, being your own boss, seeing all the beautiful sights of the country, i think i will start writing recruiting brochures, better yet, think I will go drive one myself

    Why just a burger joint?

I hear Dominoes is looking for Quality Assurance people to make videos for YouTube.

You have to have a "nose for cheese" though...

HEY RICKR,I dont have much of an answer but i have a story to share.Last year at age 39 I got laid off from a company I had been with for 5 years. With a wife and 3 kids I was (for lack of a better term) Trippen !!!!!! My wife sat me down and informed me that it was my time to do what I always wanted. So I got in touch with family (in the business) who in turn helped me stay outta the ripp off schools and i moved the family back home (Texas)and got my CDL and started driving a tanker truck in the oil field. One year later, I'm still plugging away at getting my experience,My wife got a killer job at the school district (she also got her CDL) lol and the kids are happy. So u never know rickr unless you just go for it. AND p.s. I'm not starving GOOD LUCK MAN I WISH YOU AND YOURS WELL
