LMAO.... Imagine that poor fool in FL. That went from $750k a year, to pizza delivery. Kids change your prospective really quick. I've done a lot of things I'm not proud of to insure my kids were taken care of. But I'm not ashamed of anything I did. The last thing I ever thought about doing, was driving a truck. I started out of financial need, and fell in love with the job. And here I sit....many many years later.
I guess maybe this would be a good question to post as a main topic. I know exactly one person that has ever retired from mcDonalds or any other fast food place and that is my uncle Glen, and to the best of my knowledge he didn't leave with any benefits, or retirement income other than social security. You must live on a very fast food friendly block. But I know 20 people or more who have worked as truck drivers for 30 years or more, and I'm sure I will add to that list as time goes on. I wonder if anyone else knows that many people that have worked so long at any fast food restaurant.
Actually the long timers in fast food are usually the ones who wind up owners of the franchise. Or if the franchisee is a larger corporation, which you see quite a bit of, they wind up as upper management. This is why I say that if a person actually likes that type of business, (first off, they may need a shrink) there is money to be made there. But not on the line, flipping burgers. But that is a start. I do know of several long time employees in fast food that are developmentally disabled. They are able to do a good job for their store, they are conscientious in the work that they do, they SHOW UP when scheduled. And they are happy in their jobs. You can't ask for more than that. There are an awful lot of folks who are making the big bucks now, who started out "flipping burgers." For most people, it is an entry level, part time, after school and weekend job. But a lot of these stores give a kid a chance, and teach them some work ethics. That is if the kid is willing to learn.
I actually know more than 4 drivers in my area. I was referring to the ones on my block. The fast food ?? What can I say? Around here it's a factory, truck, or a restaurant. Not much else, unless you move or travel. We have 13 fast food/restaurants in a town of 3300 people. This doesn't include the local Quik Stops that serve food. And like your Uncle, I don't know anyone that has retired with benefits. In my opinion. THAT is a job you have to love. I know I would be in jail my first week, if not my first day. After dragging some smart### across the counter. The cook at my favorite local eatery, has been there for OVER 30 years. She makes #### good money. If she quits/retires, the owner will lose his ### and he knows it.
