    I am using Garmin eLog on my iphone and it just stopped working today. The app just crashes when I try to log in.

    So what should I do in this situation? The dot website says that I have 8 days to fix it and use paper logs meanwhile. My question is, can dot officers still issue a citation/violation for non-working ELD?

    Keep a log book with you at all times. DOT don't care that your ELD isn't working

    Does that mean since all the information on previous days will be lost you have to fill out both?

    Indeed.

    In fact, I believe the FMCSA regulation actually requires a driver to have at least 8 days of paper logs to serve as a backup just for that very situation. So rookies are still going to have to learn how to fill out a logbook.

    That kind of sucks, you have to do the same job twice unless you have a printer to copy the logs every day or a back up. and they have not thought about that except how to fine the drivers for dang I better stop thare.

    Nope. Just blanks in case the ELD goes down.
    As for the last 7 days, it's gets complicated. If you are a company driver the admin should be able to log into the portal and download and fax the logs to you. If you are a single truck, well the real boss of the truck (wife) may be able to do the same.....

    In the event of a malfunction that requires a driver to reconstruct his/her previous 7 days, can a driver use a printed copy of their previous 7 days, such as a PDF copy, instead of manually recording their previous 7 days?
    Yes. In the event that the driver experiences a malfunction that impairs the ELD ability to present the driver’s previous 7 days, the driver may present their previous 7 days by way of any printed copy, or in an electronic form, such as a PDF.

    What must a driver do if there is an electronic logging device (ELD) malfunction?
    If an ELD malfunctions, a driver must:
    1. Note the malfunction of the ELD and provide written notice of the malfunction to the motor carrier within 24 hours;
    2. Reconstruct the record of duty status (RODS) for the current 24-hour period and the previous 7 consecutive days, and record the records of duty status on graph-grid paper logs that comply with 49 CFR 395.8, unless the driver already has the records or retrieves them from the ELD; and
    3. Continue to manually prepare RODS in accordance with 49 CFR 395.8 until the ELD is serviced and back in compliance. The recording of the driver’s hours of service on a paper log cannot continue for more than 8 days after the malfunction; a driver that continues to record his or her hours of service on a paper log beyond 8 days risk being placed out of service.

    Submit your electronic log to the office at the end of the day. If you're elog crashes call them up and have them email you the last 7 days and fill in the paper log.

    I swear you guys are either oblivious to what the regs actually say, or look for things to gripe about.
