I did call Garmin of course. As a matter of fact that was the first thing I did.

And just to be clear, I did not come here to discuss technical issues of this particular ELD. The only reason I came here is to ask whether or not a non-working ELD (within 8 day period) is still a violation in case I have to deal with DOT officer that has "SPYDER7723" kind of thinking, basically telling and blaming truck driver for everything, even for eld software development.

I did some research before purchasing this product. All I found was that FMCSA complaint devices meet all the criteria and ready for work. I would be happy to see some test results of different ELD's, but wait a second, these tests are non-existent, since ELD manufacturers SELF-CERTIFY their devices.

That is what I am doing right now. Using paper logs. But some people are trying to tell me that, basically, it is my fault, that I have a poorly working ELD in my truck. I really wish that I don't have to deal with DOT officer who has that type of thinking.

If Garmin ends up not being good. All you can do it try another system like BiG Road or Gorilla or KeepTruckin. I read people having trouble with KeepTruckin.

I have PeopleNet and it reliable but it's a company truck so I don't now if they sell the system. It's hard wired to the truck. Even PeopleNet needs to be reset every month or two. But the system has email if I need to send logs to D.O.T

A driver called into Satellite Rado show and said Rand McNally told him they could not take his new ELDs because they don't have enough storage or something. They have to do something to get more accounts up and going.

I wouldnt put much faith in what a caller to a trucker radio station says. Not saying this isn't accurate but would definately need verified by shelve at rand mcnally.

It happens hard telling how much damage was done to it when you was issued a truck. Then when you get back to the shop the mechanics will probably take elogs from another truck so make sure its in good working condition.
