I was just wondering what all information will hooking up a laptop at a dealer to the computer on a trucks engine tell me, we have a 94 Western Star with a Cummins N14 and a 2001 Kenworth T600 with a Detroit 430-470, would like to know a little history on them both regarding mileage and hp. Still not sure how the Detroit with the variable power 430-470 hp rating actually works off the pedal, anyone care to explain it to me i would really appreciate it, have heard so many different variations i want to know for sure, thanks for any replies and answers.
What information will the laptop reveal

What is the name of the software package for this? And what kind of interface does it have?
-
.
Short list.
Hard brakes
Max Speed
Max RPM's
Total Idle Time
Total Run Time
If you ask for a print out. It will provide the rate of decceleration, in a hard brake. The amount of time spent at max RPM's. The number of times the engine was over revved (factory specs)
The date and times. -
The Detroit ECMs store alot of information, they are like little "black boxes".If you go to a dealer they can down losd and print the data pages which will have speed, power graphs and average speed, high speed and hard braking records as well as feul consumtion. That is only part of it. About the 430/470 engine rating goes that would typically mean you have 430hp. on your foot pedal and 470hp. when using your cruise control.
-
i think the 430/470 is crap, give me my power let me use it
-
How far off do you figure before cops can raise the hood and grab your recent speed from the ecm?
-
They do not have to raise the hood just plug in under your dash.At this point they can't do that but if you were to get into a serious accident maybe one that someone died in,I'm sure some agency would get a court order and get the information. On some of the data pages you can see when (time of day) you started the engine if you moved the truck, how far,how long it took,at what road and engine speed etc.About the only thing they really wouldn't know is where you were located or started from at least until something happend. It is a Black Box.

FYI alot of ECMs that were set up with a 430/470 cruise power program usually have at least a straight 430hp. program in them and depending on the engine configuration might have a straight 470hp program to.
-
I too think the cruise power ratings are marketing hype. I have a '96 that was uprated from 360hp to the 430/470hp software. It has two possible horsepower levels...straight 430 or the 430/470 cruise power. I've tried both by changing with a pro-link, but have never noticed a difference. I found an old 2000 brochure with the 430/470hp power graphs. From 1200-1500 rpm, you're looking at 1550 lbs-ft available. Then, from 1500 to 2000 rpm is where you'll see the supposed extra power. It's a straight (linear) line from 1550 lbs-ft at 1500 rpm to 1175 lbs-ft at 2100 rpm in cruise, and 1550 lbs-ft at 1500 rpm to 1075 lbs-ft at 2100 rpm on the pedal. You'll only see the extra power above 1500 rpm (really 1600) while operating in cruise control.
When I was in cruise, I usually had it set anywhere from 1450 to 1600 rpm depending on speed. This really provides no extra power pulling hills. Yeah, you could downshift and reenable cruise, but it's simply not realistic as there is a time lag, and by the time it's in cruise power once again, you're below that peak horsepower. As stated before, it's torque that pulls hills. I prefer multi-torque at the low rpms like has been done by Cat & Cummins. Detroit now offers both--multi-torque and cruise power ratings--on their new DD15. It's the same concept of varying torque output, just the rpms at which torque output varies is different--low side or high side of the rpm range. -
Thanks for all your replies, really appreciate the help.
