I have a national plan with U.S. Cellular that includes an Internet modem for my laptop and a fairly basic phone - it's not fancy but it all works good for me with pretty good service all over the lower 48... plus no contract required.

Had two Iphones and and assortment of other phones over time. Those touch screens only take one time to be dropped, knocked off or what have you and that's the end of them. The best and most rugged phone I've ever owned was a BlackBerry. Had my first one 3 years with an Otter Box case and that phone was put through h*** including once even falling out of my pocket while tarping. Forgot about it and then ran it over with the trailer tires. That phone took some punishment and then some and still keep going. Best $100 I ever spent on a phone (amazon unlocked). Does everything I need it to including being able to download all my paperwork to "documents to go" basically like microsoft excel and so on. Great for O/O's or company drivers who receive their dispatch by phone if the truck doesn't have QC. I don't like the touch screens because they break to easy. I do have a AT&T fuzion 2 touch screen prepaid as a back up but its primary purpose is mostly personal such as billing/event calender, family photos, 16g SD for MP3 player use and it never leaves the dash. Only time it will is I'm downloading something on it or as a backup phone just in case something does happen to my primary phone. Redundancy is key because ###### does happen.
