That's what I was thinking SHC one that I was really considering you said to stay away from (BTC) I worked for a small company that paid % for 2 months because everything the owner said was a lie. The one thing I don't like about % is you are at the mercy of what the get for you and thier rates. That's why I'm asking about these companies.
What is a good company to work for?

Any of the companies can screw the driver with any pay system....In my experience ...At all companies some of the drivers make really good money and get really good runs....But someone has to take the bad runs.....What you need to look at is how many of the drivers are in which camp and why....You should expect that in the beginning you are an unknown and have to prove yourself....What is important is that if your dispatcher sees that you are reliable and can make good decisions....Then they should start to give you more responsibility ....And more of the better runs....
I had been driving for my boss about six months maybe less ...And something happened with the equipment....Broke an axle or something....I called the boss and reported it....Waiting for the #### to start and maybe getting fired.....I was just blown away....All Bobby said was.."How Do You Want To Handle It?".....I told him what I thought we should do and he just said OK and did what I said I wanted to do!....
Back when I had a good dispatcher.....And he got to know me....He would look out for me and have good runs for me and even sometimes ask me which .....Of several available loads I wanted.....But sometimes he had to give me an occasional dog that payed me about $30.00 but after I took that run without whining and ########....He'd make it up to me and I'd have a good check at the end of the week......
But some of the guys never seemed to get good runs....I'd stop back in the terminal after two or more days of running hard....And meet drivers who were just sitting and waiting for a load.....They had maybe one short run a day all week.....I'd run hard Monday through Friday and be home all weekend....And Other Drivers were working six days a week every week and Not Making the check that I was....
My point is this.....get on with the best company that you can....And then apply yourself to the best of your abilities....And hope for the best....And stick it out for at least one entire if you can.....The companies don't like drivers that job hop...Don't wreck a truck or hit anything....And don't abandon a truck...Good luck!...Arkansas Frost Thanks this. -
BTC might be a good company to work for as a company driver, but I've heard really bad things about their O/O package and it's no good. Maybe try talking with some drivers everytime you see them on the road or at the Truck Stops??

Steve That might be true in some cases but the guy I worked for had 2 trucks. Said he'd had more before the economy went south. Right before I left he hired a guy that hadn't driven in 12 years and never pulled a flat bed. He had me take the new guy over to the steel mill to see how unloading and loading coils was done. So we went over got unloaded and reloaded and that was the guys training. Needless to say I was gone the next week as I didn't want to be apart of that.

That is a description of a big part of what is wrong with the trucking industry...Nobody wants to be regulated and restricted....And I can understand that.....But but with no standards and regulation.....What you end up with is ..."The Tragedy of the Commons".....The companies that are doing a better job just can't compete with the the worst of the bad and it is a race to the bottom....
Companies hire rookies don't adequately train them....And exploit them....With little liability....When you take a big truck out on the road and the load is not adequately secured.....And it kills someone the driver can be charged with Vehicular Manslaughter...And go to Prison....Very little happens to to the company that sent him out unprepared and poorly equipped...
I was very lucky....Many good people helped me out along the way.....But I didn't make it on the strengthen of my official Training....I had hired on to pull a pneumatic tank....(You don't pick up anything heavier than a hose)...Company ed me up"We don't have any tank opening...would you pull a van?".....I said I didn't want to but I would.....They called me back in another week or so and said that they still didn't need any vans.....But would I pull a flatbed?.....I said "I don't know I never had any experience with flats at all...
No problem we will train you.....In a few days they called me and told me to got to Brooksville sign some papers and do a check-ride....I did....They sent me out for THREE DAYS.....With a 22 year old ex-Marine...And gave me a truck.....Most people never even got that.....
I've met some of our drivers at the customer to load ....That didn't know ANYTHING......One poor guy didn't even have a bar for the ratchet straps...He said..."The Boss had told him to Use A Big Screwdriver Or Something"!... I know of at least two instances of a guy spilling an entire load in the street at that time.....Now they liked me and treaded me good ...But thes guys not so much...
mrober2392 and Steering Knuckles Thank this. -
Yeah, I agree with Pilottavel2002. I watched those vidoes from 1776 Filmz, the guy that drives for Decker. I saw all 12 of them and couldn't stop watching. Love the vidoes so much that I tried to get a driving position with them, I did have enough experience though, but don't they train too? I saw where they were looking for drivers in the OH. area. Any ideas?

I've just graduated from CDL training and I live in Indiana. Trying to make up my mind between TMC and a company named PGT which is based out of Pennsylvania. PGT's biggest terminal is in Gary, Indiana.... so that would help with home time. PGT is a smaller company (compared to TMC) and has just under 1000 trucks and they run the eastern half of the US and some runs take you to Canada.

take a look at maverick. Been with them for years. I live here in your neck of the woods. Good pay the equipment is top-notch and #### good home time. I make it home on the average 48 weekends a year.BigRedBigRig Thanks this.
