What is a good mileage to engine hours ratio?

Obviously 50 to 1 or something would be ideal, because that would mean that the truck never idled and averaged 50mph an hour whenever it was running. But that's not realistic.

The truck I'm looking at has about 450000 miles and 110000 engine hours. Does this indicate too much idling for a def truck? Especially considering this thing doesn't have optimized idle installed at all, so was idling at the low rpm. It's a 2016 truck built in mid 2015.

For reference I bought mine with 950 hours and 51,000 km. Today I am just shy of 5600 hours and 427,000 km. Yielding 76.25kmh or 47.25 mph. I only idle in the coldest of winter nights maybe 10 a year. And keep my speed around probably 63mph for a moving average. I don't shut it off when fueling or otherwise a short duration, I'd rather keep the coolant flowing. I pickup idle time waiting in line to cross customs as well, probably 30 min every crossing on the average.

Yours is estimated 40.9 mph. Not horrible, could be better. Personally I wouldn't sweat much over this data alone.

Well, it's easier in Canada, where the summer nights are cool. Hard to avoid idling when you are stuck in a place like south Texas though.

Found another piece of data in the truck info display - 1370 idle gallons. So at a gallon an hour that's about 57 days, or roughly 100 rest breaks spent idling in 3 years. That's not too bad actually.

I agree. I don't run areas at times that require a.c. for sleeping. An apu for me would be 500 pounds of dead weight. Bunk heater and a reefer engine for a jump if needed. If a.c. for sleeping was an issue I would certainly have an apu. I have an inverter for a laptop and microwave. Otherwise my household electric needs are minimal.

I am convinced my isx at idle is closer to 1.5 or even 2 gallons per hour. I don't idle enough for accurate numbers, this is only my estimation from a handful of fuel ups that included a 10 hour idle and rough estimated diminished mpg numbers. All my emissions systems are intact. For the time being.

I bought my truck brand new in 2013 (December). It’s almost 5 years old. I strive to make 400 hours=20,000 miles. I’m a little behind on miles (about 1,500). It will hit 10,000 hours about a week before it rolls 500,000.

Almost 50 mph avg, nice. That's a real good ratio, especially consider that you don't run your truck very hard. My 2014 cascadia is at 663k miles / 15k hours, only about 43 mph avg, and I try to avoid idling usually...

    There isn't any.

The hours you need to concern with is the idle hours, not the total hours.

Idle hours are the indicator which tells you how much idling (washing of the cylinders) have taken place. This is where it matters.

50 mph is about average for most over the road trucks that haven't seen an excessive amount of idling. Mine had around 19xxx hrs when it hit 925000 miles at that time when we checked it.

Given that both parameters are available, how to understand what I’m seeing?
