New to O/O looking at percentage based pay. At 65 to 70%, what is average rate per mile I should seek to keep from pulling "cheap freight"?
Is there any rule of thumb figure?

Also what rate is reasonable for detention?

No one can tell you what the you have to make per mile to be able to make a good profit on a load. You have to calculate how much you need per mile for fuel and calculate your total cost to find what you need to make to break even then bid 30 cents per mile above that minimum.

Detention I would ask for around $120 per hour your not going to get it but thats roughly what you should be making per hour while running down the highway.

Now there is a job... $5 per mile, $120/hr detention, oh lets not orget the fuel surcharge!! I'm SO there! :biggrin_25526:

Really though he is right you need to figure what YOU need, that changes depending on your truck payments, how much you want to work etc. If you don't have a truck ayment you will need much more put back for rpairs, I'd say at least %50 of what a new truck payment would be, it's nothing to spend $8k or more a year maintaining an old truck, stil beats a big payment or me though.

I'd say something around $50 for detention. If it's a load you really want you can lower it a bit.

When I was an owner op the company I used to pull for never hauled a dry van load any less than $1.55 a mile and no less than $144.00 even if it was just to move a trailer. The fuel surcharge was a percentage keeping the fuel cost at $1.20 A GALLON. Hourly rate was $40 an hour after 2 hours. Florida frieght was figured at $2.14 a mile with an extra $200 bonus for any load south of I 4. That was about 8 years ago. They charged 27% to pull their trailer which makes the minimum around $1.12 a mile without the surcharge. Keep in mind it costs around $1.15 a mile to run your own truck.:biggrin_25524:
