It depends. My cousin was a 40 year steel hauler and proud of it . He had a special load bar made 30 odd years ago by a customer of theirs. He used that till the day he retired. I always thought it would be nice to get it chromed and put it on a nice plaque to hang in the shop or basement.

The OP was from "fellow drivers". To me, fellow drivers and farewell gifts are different than a company and driver farewell. If he had worked for me for 45 years I'd be doing something fairly decent for him. After all, he must have done something fairly decent or he wouldn't have been there 45 years. -
