I know if you dont buy the large print you can pick up a maginfying sheet at walmart. Basicly a magnifying sheet of plastic the size of a sheet of paper.

New York does add to their clearance postings, but I had always heard it was 1 foot for snow accumulation. I know I have gotten under many overpasses that were listed below 13'6" in the past.

As for purchasing a road atlas, Rand McNally is the way to go. I will purchase a new laminated on every two years, providing the one I have is in good shape. I can't blame someone for buying a new one every year though to have all the latest information, as it is only 20 bucks.

I heard that once myself, but I didn't know how true it is. The guy that told me said it was because on roads like the BQE, since they are elevated they can't plow them, because all the snow will fly off the side and land on cars or people.

Universal lists county roads by the correct names or numbers or, as in Iowa, alpha-numerics. They don't put the markings for dot scales in the correct areas, you can't rely on those. Rand McNally is the authority but they don't do everything well. Some of the best city maps I have seen were by Universal. It depends on what you are doing, if you are running in some states very much, it is worth it to get the Universal trucking map, as well. There is some disagreement between the two on trucking routes, in those cases, I defer to the Rand McNally.

One other thing, the large scale is coated but not laminated, the pages will get stuck together if you spill something sticky on it. It would be much thicker and heavier if all of those pages were laminated. I have a large scale, but I don't think it will be as durable as the spiral bound regular size version, it's also hard to follow a route through a state like Ohio that has four pages to cover the state. The city maps are much easier to read, though.
