I have both, and a MFJ is good for setting up your antenna system I agree...But is worthless for monitoring your set-up...You really need a way to watch what your radio is doing, other wise you won't know you have a problem until it's too late.
With a Bird set-up you can monitor your forward watts, and reflect watt's and head off problems before you fry something...
Another in-expencive SWR/Watt Meter is the Radio Shack Meter...It's small enough to won't be hard to find a place in a mobile to mount, and on the Avg setting is just as accurate as the more expencive Bird...
What is a good SWR meter to buy?

I have one of these as well. It seems to be a pretty good SWR meter, though I've had a few people tell me to "chuck that piece of garbage in the trash". Well I haven't burned up a radio yet.

RADIO SHACK meters work just fine at CB If you want to check a meter put a dummy load on the antenna side feed the radio side with your cb set, set the set scale for full scale then swch to swr ..... if it goes almost to zero the meter is fine .....
