Rockwell transmissions pretty much suck...they sue'd PACCAR accusing them of conspiring with Eaton to keep them out of the HD market... sorry guys but your transmissions kept you out of the market.
They no longer offer them in class 8 trucks. -
Rockwell really pushed the "Direct 10" approach in the 90's, saying that their 10 speed direct transmission offered the same overall ratio coverage as a 13 speed o/d transmission but better fuel savings through reduce driveline losses.

The old Freightliner I'm learning on is a 10 spd Rockwell. I have no other point of reference since this is this first truck I've driven. It's definitely finicky, but I've learned to shift up and down without a single grind. If it's considered a crappy tranny, I sure look forward to driving the Eaton next week.

My work has a 92 air start WhiteGMC made by the Volvo GM truck corporation or something funny like that with a 9 speed Rockwell. The only thing off putting about it was the shift pattern. It had a 10 speed pattern, but, you would shift one through four then split it into the first gear position which would be 5th. They actually shift pretty smooth, but our truck has almost 800k miles on it.
