Last month we were calling our customers and getting $1.50 per mile. The past week we have other companies calling us and offering only $1.15 per mile.
They all told me they need the loads moved and no trucks around. I explained I will do the load for $2.00 per mile. They thought that was highway robbery. WTF?
I don't get it, they need trucks but don't want to pay a decent rate.
What is going on with today's rates?

now that seems to be a problem all over, and the reason its a problem is that thee are still to many out there that will haul it for the cheaper rate.
there has been a lot that have lost there trucks because they insist on hauling for the cheaper rate but there is a lot still out there thatare still learning , you just cant do it sooner or later it will come around and bite you.
in this business it is not enough to make fuel money you have to make a profit or you wont be here long and it is really sad when you see all these drivers losing there trucks because they just made fuel money and we all suffer for it .
but that is the way it is till all those experts quit or lose there truck it wont get any better just to many trucks.
but when things get tough the tough get going we can outlast them.

I certainly see nothing wrong with asking for $2/mile. If they're as desperate as they're saying, they'll pay or move it themselves and see how they like barely paying for fuel. I was talking to a guy today who's been in the industry for several years and he told me that thousands of owner-ops are going out of business because the freight rates keep falling. I told him that someone has to move it and there just aren't enough idiot JB & Swifty drivers out there to do it.

I'm seeing rates on Internet Truckstop for some loads well under a dollar a mile. I'll deadhead 1st to somewhere that pays better before I bottom feed and take those loads. You can bet on that!

I don't know what's wrong with these people... My broker called me last week with a load from Atlanta to California for $3476 + $521 F/S. I told them I would let them know but, I really thought that was too cheap. The broker called me back in about 30 minutes and said never mind someone else (a flatbed co. in Louisville,KY) just took (bid) the load for $1600 less. That's only $2397 total for over 2200 miles. What makes it even worse is this was an oversized /overwidth load needing permits.

For what it's worth I've got both accounts for Internet Truckstop. One trucking companies see and the brokers side also. The brokers can't see what other brokers have posted for a rate. (on the ones that rarely actually post a rate) so if anyone wonders why one guy posts his $100 less than the other guy, it's because he doesn't know what others are offering.
You gave the best advise though, let it sit. My dad called about a load that only wanted to pay like $300, which was only like $1 per mile. So he said he'd take it but was only going to haul it $300 worth and wanted to know who was going to take it the rest of the way. The broker didn't find it funny. -
If loads were moving across the country right now for .50 cents/mile, you can bet your cheeks that there would be a broker looking for a carrier to haul it for .45 cents.
Trust me, I think some of these rates are total shiet, but that is how capitolism works. On the converse side, when all these bottom feeder carriers go titts up and the ecomomy rebounds (If this country dumps the democrats anyways) the survivors will be in a far better position to dictate rates and prosper.
The pendolum will always swing.
