For the first 4 years or so of seeing new roads I absolutely loved it. Driving the big truck down the big road, over mountains, through all types of weather, it was awesome. Anymore it's routine. I still enjoy it, but not a lot of "new" happens anymore. Got me a nice Pete, that helps to keep me in the seat. Beyond that....there's just something about being left alone and travelling while being paid. Different town every night. It's not for everyone, but I still like it, for the most part. The downside is the exact opposite. Everything and everyone is single serve, hard on relationships, hard on family, can get lonely by times. Takes a special kind of person to do it for 30 years.
Texas_hwy_287, Maj. Jackhole, Smut and 5 others Thank this. -
I'm with @gokiddogo except for the lonely part, hard on relationships, hard on family. That part never was an issue or bothered me.
I love OTR and wouldn't do any other type driving. Coast to coast & border to border; never got tired of it even after 30 yrs of it.
Love night driving and tried to work my hours so most of the driving is night driving.
born&raisedintheusa, Maj. Jackhole, TravR1 and 3 others Thank this. -
Not having a boss standing over me.
Not having to deal with back-stabbing, idiot co-workers.
The money's not bad.Dino soar, Maj. Jackhole, Smut and 5 others Thank this. -
Not having to deal with human beings. My last dispatcher did me a huge favour before he quit when he told management “don’t piss off that phsyco”

I don’t do do #### and I make more money than all the college graduates I know. I have no college debts and I don’t go to the same place that I hate every day, then go home to a place I hate.
Honestly, I tend to think people who do anything else for a living are stupid as hell. Who wants to work for a living?cybill234, PacoTaco, kemosabi49 and 4 others Thank this. -
Seeing the sights and enjoying the solitude. Listening to my favorite music or talk shows on the radio. I sometimes I wish my wife or one of my kids was with me when I see something really cool, but that feeling passes quickly and I take pictures to share with them. Resets on the road suck, which is why I'm always home when I need to be. I sat behind a desk and managed 100 people before I started driving for a living. It's a nice change.
Dino soar, Oldironfan, PacoTaco and 2 others Thank this. -
Being able to listen to Comedy and podcasts and audio books. You get to have the office with a view . You can pick and choose when and where you work. You have the opportunity to say no

Got my truck majorly jammed out with tunes for the road.I would get a dog but he better be deaf or he will be after a week on the road with me.
Put a nice comfortable lounge chair facing backwards in where the passenger seat was. Come break time it's nice to pop something in the convection oven while I catch some TV on my 40 inch.
Love to crash out any time I feel the need. Sleep like a Rock in my truckMaj. Jackhole, Oldironfan, RedRover and 1 other person Thank this. -
Borrowed from an Irish prayer.
A Truckers Prayer
May you be out of town, a half hour before the devil knows you’re there.Last edited: May 31, 2018
