I've been applying to the contracting work the military has trained me for and most definitely will jump on those immediately. Though when applying for a 250k+ salaried job, it does NOT come quick and especially when i have alot of competition. I have so far had a great experience with Swift through simple conversations and meeting individuals working for them at various TA's, they all seem to have quite nice positives about the job but then the realization of work comes to play and then things like supervision and hours are the hot issues. I am not worried about hours, if i can maintain a steady 800+/week then i will be more than satisfied. I have been selling myself short for numerous job offerings and am in the process of taking my knowledge and actually using it to make what is deserved. I worked with a multi-million dollar aircraft and one mistake on my end could cause us to lose the aircraft. Imagine that scrutiny, working with peoples lives, munitions that are extremely hazardous off rail, constantly watched by hundreds of people while involved in the intel community... i doubt i am going to find a job that is worse in terms of supervision. Swift seems to offer the better starting pay and it seems like a good step in the door and possibly push me towards something greater down the road.
What is it like to work for Swift?

Also i am in the northern california area (redding) So if any individuals have by chance connections and know who is better in my area, by all means drop a reply and let me know. I don't want to resell my soul again for pennies, this is why i am here asking questions from experienced individuals, i'll continue reading but anyone that has better insight on what company would like an individual as myself then feel free to post. Also, i do have a TS security clearance, it doesn't help in this industry but i can always throw that on the table and show that i have the squeakiest record possible.

Go back to the Air Force and retire before 40
Call_me_Tom, AzPlumSmuggler and lee1754 Thank this. -
With your security clearance and record, get ALL your endorsements, including HazMat and a TWIC card. Swift discourages getting endorsements during school because it delays processing the CDL. However, they will reimburse you for getting your endorsements later.
After you get all that THEN you have something to put on the table. Add a year or two of accident free miles and platinum status and companies will notice. Certainly opened doors for me. -
Nooooo thanks, big blue is downsizing, pay cuts and benefit cuts... there's better opportunities with the resume i have. Plus i love to travel and would rather sit on my ### making 2x the amount i made in the air force. Being enlisted is not the greatest way to retire, ####ty pay for 20 years of service and the experience you get... pfft.. barely scratch 80k.
JMichael Thanks this. -
One other thing to consider, if you decide to go with Swift, is their flatbed division. That requires an additional week of securement training. I strongly recommend that if you go that route then you should get into a trainers truck that is running flatbed. Otherwise you may end up training in dry van and THEN have to train again in flatbed. Flatbed makes an additional $0.04 per mile.

I would look into Stevens or Central Ref. before I went with swift. Both have better in house CDL programs. As a vet are you planning on using your GI to pay for the CDL school? Thats the way to go, that way you dont own them a dime.

And i hope I am not bursting your bubble, but making 80k as a driver your first year, or even 3 years in, is very very tough.
If you want that kind of money, get your hazmat and tanker. Or learn flatbed and OS/OD loads.BugAbusek Thanks this. -
I'm in the process of upgrading my seperation. Again, big blue is downsizing and me and about 300 others were cut in a 4 month time frame. Was luck of the draw, my EPR didn't matter, nor anything i did, so i got the general sep and now the VA is working in the process for full reinstatement of benefits, because right now big blue thinks its funny to draw names outta hats then separate em and cut benefits, it's a joke. Aslong as i don't become a number to the point that it doesn't matter how ###### of an airmen/person you are, you don't get laid off because of random name drawing.

I have opportunities for salaried 60k/year atm but i want to move away from a desk job. 80k is also a 20year mark for an e9, they make pennies compared to what they are worth.
