Hi,
I want to be a Owner Operator in MN.
I'm going to buy a straight truck and I want to know what do I need to be a O/O? I know I need a dot number but what else do I need?
What is needed to be a Owner Operator?

Bigjohn will be along soon with his copy and paste but in the meantime go ahead and get started reading all the docked threads in the ask an owner operator section.

Are you planning an Interstate operation or Intrastate operation? How do you plan to keep the truck busy? Do you have industry experience? What type of CDL do you have? Do you have somewhere to lease the truck as a backup? Do you know anyone running a strait truck successfully that you can call upon for advice? How will you find loads for a strait truck? Do you have a month of capital to run on while waiting to be paid?
I'm just trying to figure out where you are in the research and planning process. -
Here is my usual advice for those planning to purchase eqiupment and get their authority:
Read all the docked threads in the "Ask An Owner Operator" section. Then these are some very informative threads from past days:

Most start with a truck and trailer so I don't know much about how you will load the strait truck unless you lease to a company that hauls expedited freight. That isn't something I would want to do. -
Unless you get your own authority you will not need your own dot number. Check with some of the expedited carriers such as Gemini (Landstar), Tri State and Panther. They will tell you what you may need to lease to them.
-
As for basics, you need a vehicle/permits/insurance/accounts/$$$ in the bank/driver/business plan/business savvy and you're good to go.

Just within my State. I'll find jobs to keep the truck busy. No trucking experience. Working on my CDL Class B. Yes, I have places that I can lease a truck for backup. I dont know anyone who own a truck. I been looking at ad for O/O so I can work for them.
I do have a friend who had his CDL A. He drive for a company. He deliver furniture to people home. Maybe he can drive for me and all I need to do is get a truck. -
Quick question.
I heard from my friend that if your a Owner Operator. You have to file income taxes as self-employ, is that right? What if I hired my friend to drive for me and I pay him. How is he going to file taxes? -
He is then your employee, and you must have an employer identification number, pay him his earnings, and send both your and his portion of the employment taxes to the government.

With all due respect, you need to find the work and figure the cost before you consider the purchase.
Your present approach is a sure way to end up broke and disappointed. You obviously have no business experience since you don't understand the tax part of running a business. You have no trucking experience either. You are simply going to find jobs to keep the truck busy. Just be aware that many of the ads on places like Craig's List are scams.
You should spend a month or two reading on this forum before you go any further.
