About the closest you can get to union pay scale and benefits without being in a union. Most of the fellas that start working for the big truckload outfits never realize there are jobs out here that do in fact pay for everything you do. Some carriers (Wal-Mart) pays their drivers hub miles and pays them when they have to sleep in the truck.

Other union companies pay for detention time after as little as 30 minutes. Breakdown pay from the time you notify dispatch. Some companies even pay lay over after 12 hours without a load assignment.

The tough part is getting inside info into the best carriers. They DO NOT (as a rule advertise) and their drivers are pretty tight lipped about their pay and benefits structure.

The BEST paying outfits are usually Union. There are some privately owned carriers that serve niche markets like car haulers that may get paid a buck a mile (or more) as a COMPANY driver.

The big truckload carriers are good for getting your foot in the door so to speak but once you have 2 to 3 years experience you really should look for something MUCH better.

Transport America before fuel spiked up in 2008. Excellent communication between driver and dispatch, every problem fixed as quick as possible. Frieght was low, but that was everywhere not just us. Got me home when I needed to get home, and let me stay out when I wanted to make extra money. Pay was decent, and everybody in the company I dealt with, from dispatch and safety through the shops and service center managers were all willing to talk to the drivers. Every service center manager went out of their way to talk to every driver they saw to make sure the driver had no problems that the company could be fixed.

I've heard some bad things about Transport America since I left, so can't say anything about the company today, but when I worked for them they were a good company to run for. At least for me.

A small mom and pop company in NH called McMillan Transport. You were treated like family there, the equipment was top knotch, great people, great place, full benifits, 401K, ect... We sure worked hard, but then again we played hard too..

My personal problems were the only thing that kept me from staying with them for longer than I did.. (women... they'll do it to ya every time LOL)!

:walk:I loved SMX out of Ft. Dodge, Ia. back around 2000-2001 before the old man died. I ran regional out of Stockton, Ca. Could request Fl. if I wanted, and then get back to Ca. real easy. Them baby blue Petes sure were pretty.
