There is no way I will be able to get local right out of school, my question is how many years of OTR experience would look good on my resume to get a local/home everyday gig? There are many local companies hiring in my area and it makes me sad that I don't even have a chance.

Do you think there will still be many local positions available after 1-2 years of OTR experience?

Edit: Thank you everyone. I feel a bit better and I'll do some more research to see what I'll end up doing. The Knight day cab thing isn't going to happen, needs more experience.

What is your area? Now is the best time in 20 years for a new driver to get a local job.

Apply at your local beer, or coke distributor. Or find a job moving trailers locally.

Get on with ltl companies that have a dock to driver program (driving school). You will get the license and will either start doing local city pickups and deliveries or driving night shift between service centers, usually home daily depending on the company.

False my friend. I didn't go OTR right after school, straight to local. It can be done, you just have to beat the bushes a bit harder. As others have stated, contact beer&beverage distributors, LTL companies for dock to driver programs, warehouse companies like McLane and PFG offer driver apprentice programs, hell even look at local construction companies. You will run into companies that say you need x amount of years, but there are local companies that will hire you on and train you. You just have to be diligent and knock on a lot of doors, but it's certainly not impossible.

Sometimes you can find a company that does OTR/Regional and also runs Day Cabs. Then after getting OTR experience, apply for Day Cab spots. Or look for Spotter Driver positions. That's what I'm doing now.

Other people might do okay switching to Garbage Truck.

I currently work for Fedex Freight as a City Driver P&D and got the job right after I got my CDL. I had to go through Driver Apprentice program and spend few weeks with a trainer before I could become a City Driver though.

Check XPO and Old Dominion Freight Line they sometimes hire recent CDL graduates from approved PTDI schools.

You can also apply for Driver Apprentice only with your permit. They will prepare you for the road test so that you can get your CDL.
