I am looking at a few Volvo 780 with Cummins ISX, 2004, 2006, and 2007. I am not familiar with the Cummins engine, all I know that the N14 is a good engine, but hard to find now days and some of the ISX have no problems, but which ones?
Can somebody give more info about this:
ISX CM570 - pre EGR - what are the years of production
ISX CM870 - EGR only - years of production
ISX CM871 - EGR+DPF - years of production
What year of Volvo with Cummins has fewer problems?
What is the best year for the combination "Volvo + Cummins" ???

My favorite ISX along with a Volvo was a 2004. I liked that body style better too. I never had a problem out of that truck. My next ISX was a 2009 so I can't speak for them other years. I know I would stay away from an 07 as that was the first year of major changes.

Find a 2002 or older with an N14 or Series 60. Way better than todays.
KB3MMX Thanks this. -
You would have to find a 2004 pre-egr as thats when they started putting them on and then they had egr issues all the way until 2008 when they started the redesign. Its a known issue (cummins) and there are trucks that I heard got a warranty fix but not sure what they did. Be careful in those years you mentioned as that could cost some bucks as most trucks ended up with cracked exhaust manifolds and other issues I have heard about but never experienced. I used to have a 2004 volvo with the ISX and got rid of it along with several of my hard earned dollars.

I have an '07 780 with the 530HP ISX, but it actually the '06 engine w/o DPF.

What is the mileage and do you experience any problems with engine? -
My overall mileage is a little over 7.1 mpg, but I am seldom even 70K loaded, and have an APU so my idle is less than 10%. I have been thru a couple EGR valves (the actual '07 models they moved it to the cooler side of the engine), a turbo actuator, the fuel boost pump, both belt tensioners, and some exhaust and oil gaskets in 528K. Currently have a smoking issue Volvo was not able to resolve for me last summer, and is getting worse, so I will give the Cummins shop a shot when home next.

Get yourself anything from 04 to the first half of 07. No difference! I would pick the latest 07 and block/disconnect the EGR as the first thing and part yourself for good from the main problem of 04-07 ISXs. You could also opt for reprogramming the ECM and removing the EGR functions all together, that way you would have something like CM570.5
.5 being the VGT and physical plumbing of an EGR components.

I like version '98 (from 98 to 2002, pre version-2) with pre EGR ISX. But this truck is not easy to find in good shape

I had an '06 780 with 500 ISX and 350k on it when I got rid of it. Got 8 mpg but replaced EGR, Compressor, Fuel Boost Pump, Drag Link, Main Heater fans, windshield wiper motor,4 brake pots, air ride leveler valve, water pump,3 thermostats, oil cooler gasket, the main HVAC control was starting to go out, radio was starting to short out, had a vibration nobody could find, slave cylinder on the clutch went out and numerous sensors replaced. But hey, other than that it was a great truck.
