Semitrailer means any motor vehicle, other than a pole trailer, which is designed to be drawn by another motor vehicle and is constructed so that some part of its weight rests upon the self-propelled towing motor vehicle.

Motor vehicle means any vehicle, machine, tractor, trailer, or semitrailer propelled or drawn by mechanical power and used upon the highways in the transportation of passengers or property, or any combination thereof determined by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration

    Make it easy...

dump truck pulling a tag along trailer under 10K GVW is still a class B

hook up to a larger trailer [over 10 K GVW] and the dump truck needs a class A

This does not include the freight box on a box truck. My box trucks are registered for 33,000 and weigh 15K so we can haul close to 15K in the box...

Towing vehicle is a separate trailer, not referring to a box truck. A 26” box truck is a class B vehicle because the back of the truck is not a separate vehicle. So, the gross can’t exceed 26,001 lbs, which is product and truck. The 10,000 lbs is referring to a tractor with separate trailer. Those 33,000 lb gross weight trucks, overweight for class B license.

Ive been told by the state police during a full inspection one day with that trailer packing a paver and backhoe on the dump truck with it's air braking was a restricted A. I had a full blooded CDL A so it did not matter to them what I drove except motor cycles which were their own class. We weighed the whole combination one time at a private scale and being loaded as she was it came pretty close to that of a loaded 18 wheeler. So they went by 6 axles total and called it adequate.

    Wrong, wrong, wrong.
There is no weight limit for class B.
The only difference between an A and a B is the trailer over 10,000 lbs.

A Class B CDL allows you to drive a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) with a loaded weight of 26,001lbs

    Wrong?

Correct but there is no maximize weight for class B. It's 26,001 to whatever the max weight is for the state.

Here's a fun fact. One can drive a cmv up to 36,000 lbs without a CDL (everywhere but Cali anyway). 26,000 lbs truck and 10,000 lbs trailer.

All are weight ratings by the way.

You might want to reread the cdl requirements.
